On Your Way to College?
College can be a big change from high school. Suddenly, there's no one there to force you to go to class or do your homework. And no one but you can decide who you're going to hang out with and what your college experience will look like.
College is not just about term papers and deciding on a major. It's about deciding what you believe, how you're going to live and what you're passionate about.
Here are some things to think about as you head off to college:
- Be flexible. Things won't be as you expected. Keep an open mind and enjoy the new experiences as they come.
- Make sure you're happy with your major. Too many students are pressured by their parents and end up miserable. You might be suprised at some of the programs your school offers. Consider all your options before settling on a program of study.
- It's easy to get good grades and impress your professors. Just remember two things: 1) go to class 2) do your homework. If you don't understand something, go and see your professor in her office. It goes a long way to simply show that you care how you do in their class.
- Join clubs and activities that you are passionate about and can commit to. It's a great way to meet new friends and learn new skills.
- If you're thinking about joining a campus ministry, it's always better to connect with them sooner than later. Every ministry will have events the first week of school. It's great to have the wisdom and knowledge of some older students to guide your first few months of school.
College can be a time of spiritual growth or stagnation. Sometimes the difference can be finding a dynamic campus ministry that uniquely fits you.
